SPX Talks: Anticipating the Anesthesia Care Pathway to Improve Patient Experience

Watch the replay of our SPX Talk in English from February 18 with Fabrice Ferré (CHU Toulouse) and Olivier Thuillart (BOTDesign), who discussed how a digital companion has improved the anesthesia care pathway at CHU Toulouse, by collecting patient information before the consultation. The session was moderated by Céline Orhond.

Using a chatbot, patients complete medical questionnaires and receive educational content from home, often together with their relatives. This allows clinicians to prepare consultations in advance, reducing administrative tasks and creating more time for meaningful conversations, reassurance, and shared decision-making during the appointment.

The tool also helps identify each patient’s anesthesia risk level before surgery through validated clinical scores and AI-supported categorisation. This enables a more personalised approach to care:

  • low-risk patients can often benefit from teleconsultations,
  • while higher-risk patients receive longer and more tailored in-person consultations.

The speakers highlighted several benefits of this approach:

  • reduced preoperative anxiety,
  • better patient understanding of the care pathway,
  • improved consultation quality,
  • fewer unnecessary hospital visits,
  • and better continuity of care after surgery through digital follow-up at home.

The project demonstrates how anticipating information collection and personalising care pathways can improve both patient and clinician experience while making healthcare more efficient and accessible.
