SPX Talks: Co-Creating Better Care Pathways for Lung Cancer Patients
Watch the replay of our SPX Talk in Spanish from May 13 with Joan Fernando i Peidró, Patient Experience Project Specialist at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, who presented the Brúixola project: an initiative designed to improve support and care experiences for lung cancer patients across the C-17 healthcare network. The session was moderated by Patricia Ripoll.
During the conversation, Joan explained how the project began by listening directly to patients and professionals to identify unmet needs throughout the lung cancer care pathway. Rather than starting with predefined solutions, the team first explored the real challenges patients experienced during diagnosis, referral and coordination between hospitals.
One of the main findings was the need for clearer and more consistent information during transitions between centres. Through a co-creation process involving multiple hospitals, healthcare professionals and patients, the project prioritized improving communication, orientation and access to information across the network.
A key aspect of the discussion was the importance of collaboration between institutions. Joan highlighted that the biggest challenge was not resistance to change, but coordinating different teams, timelines and ways of working. However, the process itself helped strengthen communication between professionals and created a more shared understanding of patient needs.
The session also explored the reality of patient experience projects: meaningful change takes time. Joan emphasized that these initiatives are iterative and evolve continuously through listening, evaluation and feedback from both patients and professionals. The Brúixola project is currently assessing whether patients feel better informed and more supported throughout their care journey.
Finally, the conversation reflected on the broader cultural shift in healthcare towards genuine co-creation. As Joan explained, healthcare systems have traditionally designed solutions for patients without involving them directly. Projects like Brúixola aim to change that approach by integrating patients’ voices into every stage of the process.
