SPX Talk: Patient Experience Starts with Empowerment, Culture, and Listening

Watch the replay of our SPX Talk in English from March 18, with Edgard Eeckman, healthcare communication expert, researcher, and advocate for patient empowerment, who discussed how power dynamics, organizational culture, and strategic listening shape patient experience in healthcare. The session was moderated by Joep Paemen.

During the conversation, Edgard Eeckman emphasized that patient experience is fundamentally a human and ethical issue. When people become ill, they become dependent on healthcare professionals and organizations, which creates an unavoidable power imbalance. According to Eeckman, healthcare providers should not only focus on delivering high-quality medical care but also on helping patients regain a sense of control over their healthcare journey.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of patient empowerment. While healthcare systems increasingly encourage patients to take an active role in managing their health, empowerment should never become a way to shift responsibilities onto vulnerable individuals. Instead, organizations should provide the support, information, and partnership patients need to participate meaningfully in their care.

Another key theme was the role of organizational culture. Eeckman argued that patient-centered care can only flourish in environments where leaders actively promote empathy, listening, and collaboration. He introduced the concept of “strategic listening,” encouraging healthcare organizations to systematically collect and act upon feedback from both patients and staff.

Finally, the session explored the connection between empowered patients and empowered professionals. Healthcare organizations that foster open communication, value employee input, and encourage constructive dialogue are better equipped to improve both patient and staff experience.

Despite the many challenges facing healthcare today, Eeckman remains optimistic. By maintaining a focus on human relationships, listening, and shared responsibility, healthcare organizations can continue building more compassionate and patient-centered systems.
